In this post, I explore a real-life coaching client scenario to demonstrate how a strategic life coaching approach can transform seemingly insurmountable career challenges into opportunities for growth and fulfillment.

Coaching Client Scenario: Sarah’s Struggle

Sarah, a human resources professional in her mid-thirties, has dedicated over a decade to the same industry. Despite her extensive experience, she now finds herself stuck in a role that no longer fulfills her, and with little chance of future advancement. The fear of the unknown, financial concerns and a lack of clarity about her desired career path contribute to her viewing her situation as an insurmountable problem. She knows she doesn’t want to continue on this path, but she isn’t clear on what the right path is. And, to compound the problem, Sarah’s income is vital to her family. She can’t afford to risk losing her job so she keeps showing up, feeling increasingly bored and frustrated.

Life Coaching Approach—4 Stages

As a life coach, the key to helping solve this problem is to acknowledge and address Sarah’s concerns in every area of her life, not just her career. Instead of viewing her situation as an overwhelming obstacle, we break it down into manageable steps.

I suggested that Sarah gain clarity about a new career direction by taking the career assessment tests in the Career Change Kit as a first step. Once Sarah had clarity about her desired career path, she then took courses to develop new skills and get the credentials she needed in her new field. She then booked several informational interviews to learn more about this field while developing her network of contacts. Step by step, she made a successful transition to a more fulfilling role in a different industry. The seemingly insurmountable problem was transformed into an opportunity for professional growth and greater happiness.
